Are there any federal tax incentives for electric vehicles?

New Electric Vehicles

All-electric, plug-in hybrid, and fuel cell electric vehicles purchased new in 2023 or after may be eligible for a federal income tax credit of up to $7,500.

The availability of the credit will depend on several factors, including the vehicle's MSRP, its final assembly location, battery component and/or critical minerals sourcing, and your modified adjusted gross income (AGI).

Can I appeal the denial of my rebate application?

The Department of Energy Resources (DOER) considers appeals to the denial of a rebate application on a case-by-case basis. To request DOER consider an appeal, a dealer or consumer must contact the MOR-EV@energycenter.org within 90 calendar days of the date of application denial. The appeal must include all facts that form the basis for the appeal. Any appeals submitted more than 90 days following application denial will not be eligible for review and consideration.

Why don't I see my vehicle on the eligibility list?

Vehicle manufacturers (OEMs) must meet a number of program requirements for MOR-EV program eligibility. Generally, a vehicle is not eligible to participate in the MOR-EV for one of these reasons:

  • It does not meet the ZEV definition. Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles no longer qualify for the program as of July 1, 2023.
  • It does not meet the approved California Air Resources Board certification requirements.
  • It does not meet the purchase price requirements of MOR-EV Standard, MOR-EV Used, MOR-EV Trucks or MOR-EV Medium-Duty and Heavy-Duty

How will I know if I get the rebate or not?

If funds are available when a final application and supporting documents are submitted, the rebate amount will be reserved. If all the requirements are met, the applicant will receive the rebate. A notification email will be sent when the application is approved. For more details on the application requirements, see the following MOR-EV applicant requirements.
